Background

The Rugby School Group’s third international sister school opened in Lagos in September 2025. Rugby School Nigeria is a day and Boarding school with capacity for 1,600 students aged 11 to 18 located on a spectacular campus at Eko Atlantic, in the heart of one of the world’s most exciting cities.

It offers the full Rugby experience focusing upon the development of the whole person. Students follow the Rugby curriculum, leading to IGCSE and A-level studies, which will provide students with access to the world’s leading universities.

JOB PURPOSE

The post holder is required to teach the English curriculum and contribute positively to the work and development of the English department.

The successful applicant will be an inspirational and experienced teacher of English. 

He/she should have proven organisational skills and a strong knowledge of current technological advances as they impact on English and the enthusiasm to inspire at all levels.

The English Teacher will work closely with the Head of English and the Librarian. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Students

  • Responsibility for the progress, attainment and welfare of students.
  • Follow a common approach to prep in line with the school policy.
  • Follow procedures for rewards and sanctions in line with the school’s behaviour policy

Staff

  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with colleagues within the English department and across the wider School.

Administration

  • Ensure that assessment of students’ work follows the departmental marking policy and that accurate records are maintained for students taught.
  • Attend departmental meetings; contribute, as required, to the various open mornings

Teaching

  • Plan, prepare and teach well-structured lessons.
  • Teach students according to their individual educational needs, setting and marking appropriate work, including examinations.
  • Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all students, knowing when to differentiate appropriately.
  • Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of students.
  • Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge students.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual students and of any class or group of students assigned.
  • Manage pupil behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment.
  • Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge.
  • Participate in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.

Assessment and reports

  • Make accurate and productive use of assessment, providing or contributing oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual students and groups of students, as advised by your Line Manager
  • Use relevant data to monitor, progress, set targets and plan subsequent lessons.
  • Give students regular feedback, both orally and through accurate marking.

Appraisal and professional development

  • Participate in arrangements made for teacher appraisal and professional development.
  • Undertake such training as may be reasonably required by the School to adapt to the changing requirements of the School or as may be necessary to fulfil the School’s statutory or regulatory obligations.
  • To undertake mandated job related training as required and instructed by the School.

Additional professional responsibilities

  • Fulfil wider professional responsibilities by making a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the School.
  • Contribute to the provision of activities to support the co-curricular programme of the School.
  • Participate in Boarding duties as and when required
  • Accompany students on trips away from the School.
  • Attend assemblies, registration of students and supervise students outside the classroom, whether these duties are to be performed before, during or after School sessions.

Child protection, discipline, health and safety

  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among the students and safeguard their health and safety both when they are on the School premises and when they are engaged in authorised School activities elsewhere.
  • Act in accordance with Rugby School Nigeria’s policies and procedures at all times.

Public examinations

  • Participate in arrangements for preparing students for examinations and supervise them during public and internal examinations and assessments.

Co-curricular

  • Rugby School Nigeria is a seven days a week boarding school. All staff are expected to tutor and to contribute to the co-curricular programme.

Person Specification

Qualifications

A graduate with a good honours degree from a leading university.

QTS or equivalent recognised teaching qualification.

PGCE.

A Masters or further degree.

Experience

Experience of teaching English effectively.

Experience of tracking and monitoring pupil progress and responding accordingly.

Evidence of commitment to ongoing professional development.
