Adaptive Learning

Heli Laiho-Murdoch - SEND Coordinator

Head of Department

Ms. Heli Laiho-Murdoch is a Neurodivergence Specialist and Education Consultant. She has over 15 years experience in teaching, senior leadership, and advising Schools on how to effectively transform their Special Education Needs provisions through training, systems operations and visionary strategy.

At Rugby School Nigeria, we recognise that every student learns differently. Our Adaptive Teaching approach ensures that teaching is responsive to individual strengths, needs and learning styles, enabling every student to access the curriculum and achieve their full potential.

Two students stand beside a desk with a laptop, exploring small containers as part of an Adaptive Learning activity. One holds an object while the other watches attentively. Folders, a water cooler, and a bag are scattered on the desk in this dynamic classroom setting.

Supporting Every Learner

Teachers adapt their approach to ensure that students can engage with learning in ways that work best for them. This may include scaffolding, visual and multisensory resources, modelling, structured instructions, assistive technology and opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding in different ways. We maintain high expectations for every student while providing the support they need to succeed.

Student Evaluation & Support

We take a collaborative approach to understanding and supporting student needs. Teachers work closely with the Adaptive Learning Centre, SENCO, Pastoral Team and families, drawing on student support profiles, access arrangements, classroom observations and, where appropriate, additional assessments and specialist services.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Students who speak English as an additional language are supported through clear, accessible teaching that helps them engage confidently with the curriculum. Teachers use visual resources, simple explanations, modelling, clarification of unfamiliar terms, thinking time and regular checks for understanding to ensure that language does not become a barrier to learning.

Guidance & Counselling Services

Our Guidance and Counselling Services provide students with a supportive space to discuss their wellbeing, personal development and any challenges they may encounter during their school journey.
