Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form)

The Upper School (Sixth Form) at Rugby School Nigeria is a 2-year program that will allow students (ages 16 and above) to immerse themselves in advanced study. Students will enjoy the satisfaction of taking control over their chosen academic path by studying subjects they have personally chosen and, in the process, they will begin to mould their futures.

Upper School courses are academically demanding. Success requires a willingness to be scholarly and creative, curious and critical, determined and ambitious, to develop ideas independently and collaboratively.

Subjects that are on offer include the following:

  • Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
  • Mathematics: Mathematics & Further Mathematics
  • Humanities: History, Geography, Psychology
  • Languages: English Literature, French, Spanish
  • Creative & Business: Art, Music, Economics, Business Studies
  • Technology & Physical Education: Computer Science, Physical Education

At Rugby School, students who opt for A level must study a minimum of three subjects; this is excluding students engaging in Further Mathematics, in addition to Mathematics In that circumstance, students will be able to study four subjects (i.e. two Mathematics courses and two other subjects).

There is also the option to take an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) on a topic of their choice. The EPQ supports the development of independent research skills and allows students to pursue their curiosity and personal academic interests.

A levels are graded on an A*- E scale, and A-level students will participate in 42 periods per fortnight of taught lessons (49 for those students who take Further Mathematics).

As students develop through their lessons, enrichment, careers programme and Rugby 360 (community action and service programme), they start to understand the place of their academic learning in the real world.

Assessment

A-level courses are assessed through linear examinations. Some have coursework components but this varies from one subject to another; most do not. The form that coursework and examinations take is dependent on the subject but reflects the skills important for that area of study. Public examinations take place during May and June and results are published in mid-August.

World Scholars Club

The World Scholars Cup is an international team-based academic tournament that brings together students from around the world. The competition progresses from Regional Rounds to Global Rounds, bringing students from diverse cultures together to explore ideas and contemporary issues that shape the present and the future.

The WSC has two divisions: Junior (ages 10–13) and Senior (ages 14 and above). Students compete in teams of three across four events: Team Debate, Scholar’s Bowl, Collaborative Writing, and Scholar’s Challenge. All events draw on a six-subject academic syllabus covering Art & Music, Literature, Social Studies, Special Area, History, and Science. Scholars prepare using the curriculum materials provided through the official WSC website.

Beyond competition, the WSC develops a wide range of academic and personal skills, including research, creative and analytical writing, critical thinking, argumentation, resilience, collaboration, confidence, global awareness, and intercultural communication. It also provides students with valuable opportunities to network with peers from around the world and broaden their perspectives.

The experience extends beyond the competition itself. Scholars are given opportunities to explore the historical, cultural, and educational landmarks of host cities, enriching their understanding of different societies and cultures.

For the 2026 Tournament of Champions at Yale University, participants engage with scholarship awardees and gain valuable insights into university admissions, scholarships, opportunities, and student life abroad. They also have opportunities to visit leading institutions such as Harvard University and MIT, providing further exposure to world-class higher education and inspiring students to aspire to the very best.
