We were delighted to welcome Rachel Iliya to our offices today. A rising star on the Nigerian Rugby League women’s team, Rachel is a passionate advocate for the sport and an inspiring role model for young athletes.
Our discussion focused on the exciting possibility of hosting upcoming international women’s fixtures on our full-size pitch when Rugby School Nigeria opens in mid-September.
These friendlies will form part of the national team’s preparations for a major international clash on 21 October 2025 in Ontario, Canada—where Nigeria will face Ireland in the World Series, a key qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
“These matches at Rugby School Nigeria are vital preparation for our World Series game against Ireland,” said Rachel.
“We’re proud to be representing the Middle East Africa region after winning the qualifiers in Nairobi last September, and we’re confident we’ll build on that performance and go even further,” she adds.
We are proud to be forging strong ties with the national women’s team.
According to Mr Ade Adebisi, Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Rugby League, the sport is gaining momentum across the country:
“Together with Rugby School Nigeria, we will create new pathways in women’s sport. Many girls are now transitioning from football and athletics because rugby league offers greater opportunities.”
